  The wolf part is actually incorrect. Although the wolf was hungry he was not following the car because he wanted more food but he was warning the driver because up ahead later there was a landslide/avalanche that he avoided simply because the wolf kept stopping him and delaying him. And like you said, wolves are smart and show affection. So because of the food provided the wolf protected the man.
